New York Living Rooms is the first instalment in Dominique Nabokov’s holy trinity of interior photography works. Re-published by Apartamento Publishing more than two decades after its first publication in 1998. Commissioned originally as a photographic essay for the New Yorker in 1995, it offers an honest and intimate study of the interior spaces of some of the city’s most notable cultural figures, such as Susan Sontag, Norman Mailer, Louise Bourgeois, Francesco Clemente, Allen Ginsberg and Joan Didion.

Without adding or altering anything, Nabokov refers to these images as her interior ‘portraits.’ While some spaces are empathetic and ostentatious, others house only the bare necessities. Nabokov simply portrays them for her most eagle-eyed acquaintances, leaving us to decipher the rest. Out of print for a long time, this updated edition has revived a period of New York history, from the perspective of Nabokov’s original Polaroid photos, with the original foreword by English Poet James Fenton. It also lays the foundation for the upcoming Paris and Berlin editions, which Apartamento will reissue later in 2021.
